In response to concerns nationwide about gun violence in schools, 56 students from EASTCONN’s Arts at the Capitol Theater (ACT) magnet high school organized a walkout in March.
Held in Willimantic’s Memorial Park, ACT students used their artistic talents to perform student works of poetry and music to convey their message. Students held a moment of silence in remembrance of the lives lost during school shootings, and wore orange ribbons, the color that has come to represent the anti-gun-violence movement. Several Hartford-based media outlets reported on the event, which was also attended by Connecticut Senator Mae Flexer and State Representative Susan Johnson.
The school provided a separate, in-school, anti-violence forum for students who did not participate in the walkout, also featuring student performances and speeches.
EASTCONN’s Quinebaug Middle College had held a 17-minute walkout shortly after the February school shooting in Parkland, Fla., in memory of the 17 students and staff who lost their lives.
