Hampton CT, March 15, 2019 – K-8 teachers and curriculum leaders are invited to attend EASTCONN’s 3rd Annual Summer Literacy Institute from June 24-27, 2019. Sessions will be held from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at EASTCONN’s Conference Center, 376 Hartford Turnpike, Hampton.
New and returning participants will learn strategies to help students become critical readers and dynamic writers, utilizing the workshop model of instruction. Presenters include Kate Roberts, Gravity Goldberg, Hannah Schneewind and EASTCONN literacy specialists Linda Kauffmann and Tiffany Smith.
“The Reading and Writing Workshop offers an instructional model for student-directed learning that supports a balanced literacy approach,” said EASTCONN Literacy Education Specialist Tiffany Smith. “Underpinning the model’s structural components is the philosophy that fostering literacy communities in the classroom and increasing students’ independence as readers and writers leads to dramatic gains in literacy achievement.”
“Many teachers are asking how to address the social, emotional needs of students. New findings show how the workshop model naturally integrates SEL by building student agency, decision making and goal setting. The summer institute serves as a great learning and networking opportunity for teachers to explore and share effective practice to meet the needs of students,” said Diane Dugas, Director of EASTCONN’s Center for Educational Leadership.
Presenter Kate Roberts is a national literacy consultant, author, educator and keynote speaker. Formerly a Teachers College Reading and Writing Project consultant, Roberts is also the co-author of the popular Falling in Love with Close Reading, and of DIY Literacy.
"When we are able to tailor our methods to the needs of our students, we can make sure that every kid in our class is able to make moves that help them grow,” said Roberts. “We know what these methods are, we know how to teach kids to grow as readers and writers, and we can become more comfortable with these methods, skills and strategies."
Gravity Goldberg is a national educational consultant and author of Mindsets and Moves, What Do I Teach Readers Tomorrow?, and, most recently, Teach Like Yourself.
Hannah Schneewind is a certified Connecticut Reading Specialist and a former Teachers College staff developer.
