Double Robotics Overview and Usage
Assistive technology (AT) consists of both devices and services. An assistive technology device is defined by IDEA 2004 as "any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a child with a disability. The term does not include a medical device that is surgically implanted, or the replacement of such device." (Sec. 300.5).
An assistive technology service is defined by IDEA 2004 as "any service that directly assists a child with a disability in the selection, acquisition, or use of an assistive technology device." (Sec. 300.6). Services include evaluation, selection, coordination with the educational team, and training.
Students with all types of disabilities benefit from assistive technology devices and services. Whether a student with disabilities experiences difficulties with reading, writing, communication, access, or more, there is technology available that may assist that student.
