Sister Act Musical at the Capitol Theater, Dec. 1, 2, & 3, 2016

Willimantic – These days, everyone needs a good laugh, which EASTCONN’s Arts at the Capitol Theater (ACT) students promise to deliver when they perform the musical comedy Sister Act at 7 p.m., on Thurs., Fri., and Sat., Dec. 1, 2, and 3, 2016, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sat., Dec. 3, at EASTCONN’s Capitol Theater, 896 Main St., Willimantic. The public is invited.

ACT sophomore, junior and senior acting majors comprise the Sister Act cast, which includes Jocelyn Hoagland, of Willimantic, who plays Deloris; Rachael Vroman, of Chaplin, who plays Mother Superior; Juliana Sliva, of Brooklyn, who plays Mary Robert; Caitlyn Higgins, of Colchester, who plays Mary Patrick; Caleb Burelle, of Hampton, who plays Curtis; and Tayon Kulos, of Norwich, who plays Eddie.

A contingent of ACT students will support the Sister Act cast behind the scenes with their work on lighting, sound, scenery, set design and costuming.

Nominated for five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Sister Act is based on the 1992 film that featured comedian Whoopi Goldberg as the hapless disco diva, Deloris Van Cartier. The plot: Deloris witnesses a murder, escapes and is placed into protective custody by the police. But they decide to hide her in a most unlikely place: a convent. And the fun begins, as Deloris, disguised as a nun, breathes new life into the convent while the nuns join her in rollicking gospel performances that draw inspired crowds to the cash-strapped convent. Soon, however, the gang discovers her whereabouts and things look dark for Deloris, until her new convent family and friends come to her aid.

Sister Act is directed by ACT drama instructor Sandra Evans-Abbott; musical direction is by Katherine Popovic, with choreography by Sarah Mallory.

Regular tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students, seniors and children; and $5 for ACT students, alumni and military personnel. Tickets may be reserved in advance by calling 860-465-5636. The Capitol Theater Box Office will open one hour before show time for walk-up ticket sales. The Parents of ACT (PACT) group will host a silent auction fund-raiser during the performances.
