Assistive technology consists of both devices and services. An assistive technology device is defined by IDEA 2004 as "any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a child with a disability. The term does not include a medical device that is surgically implanted, or the replacement of such device." ( 34CFR§ 300.5).
An assistive technology service is defined by IDEA 2004 as "any service that directly assists a child with a disability in the selection, acquisition, or use of an assistive technology device." ( 34CFR§ 300.6). Services include evaluation, selection, coordination with the educational team, and training.
Students with all types of disabilities benefit from assistive technologies. Whether a student with disabilities experiences difficulties with reading, writing, communication, access, and more., there are technologies available that may assist that student.
The Assistive Technology (AT) In-Residence Program provides ongoing support for your school or district's AT needs throughout the school year, including individual student assessment, ongoing training and mentoring, support for modification of materials to provide access to the curriculum and differentiation of instruction, as well as support for intervention and progress monitoring in a Scientific Research-Based Interventions (SRBI) model. Priority scheduling is given to schools with In-Residence programs, and services are tailored to meet their needs.
EASTCONN's Assistive Technology (AT) specialists can assess individual student needs and identify potential AT solutions, from low- to high-tech, to support student achievement.
