QMC Principal Earns UConn ECE Award

EASTCONN is pleased to announce that Quinebaug Middle College Principal Mary Kay Tshonas has been honored with the “Principal Award for Program Support and Advocacy” by the University of Connecticut’s Early College Experience (ECE) program.

“I am extremely honored to have been named an award winner, especially given the large pool of nominees,” said Tshonas. “As always, I appreciate the opportunity to lead QMC’s incredible staff and to work for an agency that values innovation!”

Tshonas’s QMC students have free access to UConn college courses, while attending QMC. This year, an average of 22 QMC students were enrolled, per course, in UConn’s ECE classes at the middle college. QMC is a magnet high school administered by EASTCONN and is located on the campus of Quinebaug Valley Community College in Danielson. While enrolled at QMC, students can take both UConn ECE classes, as well as QVCC classes, and earn free, transferable college credits.

“On behalf of all of us at UConn ECE, we sincerely enjoy working with this community of over 1,400 instructors [at high schools statewide] and close to 500 administrators,” said Dr. Brian A. Boecherer, Executive Director of the Office of Early College Programs and UConn Early College Experience in his letter announcing Tshonas’s award. “We value your collective efforts to engage student learning, kindle excitement for your discipline, and cultivate the spirit of academic inquiry.”
